Supreme Court Agrees To Review ACLU's Landmark Indefinite Detention Case (12/5/2008) Print E-mail

WASHINGTON, DC - The Supreme Court today agreed to review the Bush administration's claim that it can indefinitely imprison a legal resident of the United States without charge or trial. The case was filed on behalf of Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri, who has been detained in solitary confinement at a Navy brig in South Carolina since June 2003. Al-Marri asked the Court to reverse a federal appeals court decision that gave the president sweeping power to deprive individuals in the United States of their most basic constitutional rights by designating them as "enemy combatants."

LAGRANGE, OH - David Hernandez's story could hardly be more all-American.

On Monday, December 1, a SWAT team with semi-automatic rifles entered the private home of the Stowers family in LaGrange, Ohio, herded the family onto the couches in the living room, and kept guns trained on parents, children, infants and toddlers, from approximately 11 AM to 8 PM. The team was aggressive and belligerent. The children were quite traumatized. At some point, the “bad cop” SWAT team was relieved by another team, a “good cop” team that tried to befriend the family. The Stowers family has run a very large, well-known food cooperative called Manna Storehouse on the western side of the greater Cleveland area for many years.

Harlingen veteran joins ACLU lawsuit over midwives and passport denial Print E-mail

HARLINGEN, TX - David Hernandez's story could hardly be more all-American.

He's the grandson of a U.S. citizen and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He grew up in a Harlingen home where American flags and Van Halen banners were given equal wall space.

But because he was delivered by a midwife in South Texas, the government is now denying Hernandez a passport, claiming that his birth certificate might have been fraudulently provided.
